Starting from a young age, just how we want our bedrooms to be decorated reflects our varying personalities and preferences. When we are in the younger years, cartoon bed sets typically decorate our mattresses. Likewise, the toys we prefer also represent our favorite characters from movies or TV programs. Then sooner or later, we decide that we would like to be more grown up, so we revise our bedroom by ridding it of everything immature. And then finally, when it comes time to head off to school, as college freshmen, we individualize our dorm rooms with posters, photos and other wall art all in an effort to make our first space away from home comfy and familiar.
For me personally, I always had a thing for Disney films, particularly, the Lion King. Thus, one of my very first sheet sets featured characters from the film. Further, my bedroom was packed with playthings, games and books all featuring Lion King characters. Then, going into my pre-teen years, I became obsessed with Spongebob Squarepants. I wanted a less immature space, so for Christmas one year, my mom bought me a new bed set that was covered in characters from the show. I am not certain exactly what made me believe this was more grown up, but I remember viewing Spongebob as a more adult show. Following the bedding came a big body pillow with Spongebob himself, which replaced my stuffed Disney characters. Then toys and games obviously were not cool anymore, so those were traded for a CD player. Modifying my bedroom was constant. I went through a stars and moons phase, and then the color pink was my infatuation through the earlier college years. Finally, as a young adult my bedroom represents a relaxed place. I no longer need characters from films or cartoons to exhibit who I am, but rather simple colors along with a more classy decor.
Starting at a young age, one’s personality can be read by the way they decorate their bedroom. Whether it be the bed sheets, toys and games, posters or anything else stored in their bedroom, the unique differences are expressions of personality. This is true all the way into our adulthood. An individual’s bedroom is their own until we begin to share it with another person.
