At the outset the Canon PowerShot S95 seems to be another point-and-shoot camera: small and compact, all black and stylish. Then a quick look over the specs and external controls leads you to think otherwise.

Canon PowerShot S95 specifications:

10.0 megapixel CDD; fast f2 zoom lens with a range from 28-105mm (as a 35 SLR equivalent).

In exposure mode, it has access to Program AE as well as shutter and aperture priority plus manual.
Using the hybrid IS system theCanon PowerShot S95 gives a more improved image stabilisation, lessening camera shake by the equivalent of four f stops.

The Canon PowerShot S95 has a High Dynamic Range mode achieved by simultaneously capturing three pictures with distinctive exposures, then combining them into one image using in-camera software.

Maximum image measurements is 3648 x 2736 pixels, enabling a 31 x 23 cm print to be made at three hundred dpi. Movies at 1280 x 720 pixels at 30 fps.

The great news keeps happening: you are able to shoot pictures in RAW and JEPG in addition to simultaneous RAW JPEG files saved to the card.

The less than good news is the maximum continuous speed is only 1.9 images/second with exposure and focus set before shooting; if you prefer continuous focus, the capture rate is only 7 frames per 10s. The Canon PowerShot S95 will continue shooting as long as you press down the shutter.

  • Startup Time: It took less than two seconds from power on to the 1st shot. Follow-ons about 1 second apart.
  • Quality: Pin sharp pics, excellent tonal range.
  • Distortion: There was no sign of any distortion with the zoom lens set at wide and tele focal lenght. An excellent performance.

Overall:
There’s not much to disapprove of, apart from the all-black finish makes the top power and shutter controls (also in black) being hard to see.

I found the Canon PowerShot S95 a pleasure to use, very professional and quick.

Why you would invest in the Canon PowerShot S95: you would rather a vari-angle LCD screen; you have use RAW capture.
Why you wouldn’t: the camera does not shoot Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels; it does not offer Adobe RGB colour space.

In any fashion, this is a very exceptional digital camera.

You need to define your needs when deciding which camcorder to buy, especially cheap digital camcorders. How is your camcorder to be used if you are opting for cheap digital camcorders? What benefits do varied camcorders provide and what features do you need? Can you get everything you need for the price that you are willing and able to pay? The reality is that though camcorders are much cheaper than ten years ago, the more you pay out, the more you get.

However, when deciding which camcorder you should buy, defining your needs saves you money and time in reference to cheap digital camcorders. Here are some tips and key things to focus on to help get you the most out of a camcorder:

1) Usages ? family events/memories use low grade levels; for travel, wildlife and no blurring with motion, opt for $200 US+ varieties

2) Memory ? avoid limited recording times by not using flash drives/hard-disks; choose USB/SD card ports and memory cards with SD (up to 2GB), SDHC (4GB up to 32GB) and/or SDXC (64GB+); the best is 4GB+ with recording times of about 5 hours from 64GB; and opt for the 3 year wait for the 2TB level

3) Formats ? for HDV format recordings, choose AVCHD versus MPEG-4 to allow computer storage on machines with 4GB RAM and 2GB processors

4) Screens – LCD let your see clearly what you are looking at and allow you to preview your recordings easily; high-resolution is best; avoid big, reflective and bright screens to avoid wearing down your batteries quickly; and get an LCD screen you can operate easily

5) Lenses – get lenses with a minimum of 10X zoom capability for general use and higher magnifications for business use; and ensure the recording pixels are as high as you can get them to avoid grainy images when using your zoom feature

6) Stabilization of Images/audio – get a camcorder with both stabilization in case of shaky hands and audio stabilization to avoid picking up unwanted sounds

7) Battery Types ? avoid 1 hour capacity batteries, instead opting for high capacity/to 3 hour version types

8) Microphones – front mounted to avoid sounds you might make whilst recording; plug in ports for external microphones are helpful and zoom microphones to capture the sounds and voice of your subject versus any other sounds

9) Lighting Modes ? find features for varied lighting conditions such as infrared, low and bright light settings

10) Weight and Controls Locations – pick a camcorder that fits your hands and is light enough for you to hold up for long periods of time to avoid jittery hands, tired arms and the inability to use controls with little notice
