The character for the famous Paddington bear was found with a tag around his neck at the paddington Station in London, asking someone to please take care of him. It is said that the Brown family found the lost teddy bear and because they found him at the train station they called him Paddington. They adopted him immediately and took him home to live with them. Paddington changes the lives of the Brown family the minute he went to live with them.
Paddington’s Humble Beginnings
The imaginative story of Paddington Bear was created by Michael Bond, who wrote the book called “A bear Called Paddington”. The inspiration for the book was a forlorn teddy bear sitting all alone on a shelf in a Department Store in London where Michael sought shelter from a snow storm. The true story is that he purchase the little bear and took it home for his wife, where it was names Paddington, after the nearby train station.
In the beginning Michael wanted paddington to be born in Africa but since there are no bears in Africa, Paddington’s birthplace became Peru. The story he told was that Padding Bear was sent to the train station by his Aunt Lucy that had become too old to care for him anymore.
Michael Bond not only patterned his stories after his own Paddington, but the Browns in the story bore a slight resemblance to the Bonds. Padding bear was so popular that six more collections were written between the years 1968 and 1981. Pen and ink drawings were illustrated by artist Peggy Fortnum for a few of the books. She modeled Paddington after a Malayan bear living at the London Zoo.
Paddington Bear was a curious teddy bear. Dark Peru was so much different than the city of London for Paddington. Most Londoners were surprised at the pure fascination for Paddington Bear. Fans all over the world are endeared to Paddington for the adorable way he observes life in general. He shows wisdom beyond his years because of the years he was raised by his matronly Aunt Lucy.
Paddington Bear stuffed teddy bears and other memorabilia became popular when he became the star of his TV series in 1972. In his stories he wears wellington boots, a blue coat, and a very floppy bush hat. In the last years there were other clothes added to his wardrobe, in order to keep him fashionable. Many collectors would love to get their hands on one of the original Paddington Bears.
